PODIUM AND TOP-FIVE RESULTS FOR SUPERTUNE AT ROK THE RIO

It looked to be a promising weekend for Supertune at the final ROK Cup USA event of 2020. Taking on the annual ROK the RIO event in Las Vegas, Nevada, Supertune drivers were at the front of the field scoring heat race wins and fast laps en route to one podium, three top-five finishes and six top-ten results in the biggest North American karting event of the season.

“It was a good weekend where we showed great results leading up to Sunday,” explained Ben Cruttenden. “Looked to be in position to have a shot at the Junior 100cc and Junior ROK wins with several of our drivers, but it wasn’t meant to be. All in all, we showed great pace and turned some heads with the amount of Supertune drivers that were at the front of the field.”

Noah Baker would lead the Junior 100cc Supertune drivers with a fourth-place result on Sunday. After qualifying second and having second, seventh and third place results in three of his four heat races, Baker jumped from his sixth place starting position to lead the majority of the race before eventually finishing second on track, but was classified in the fourth position after post-race penalties. Looking as if they had put two Supertune drivers in the top-four, Cameron Weinberg crossed the line fourth on track, but was classified sixth in the final results. Weinberg was a model of consistency all weekend long with all four of his heat race results in the top-ten.

Supertune’s strongest results came from the Junior ROK quartet as John Burke led the way with a second-place finish ahead of Weinberg in fourth and Baker in seventh. After qualifying sixth, Burke scored two heat race wins to secure the pole position for the main event. Battling hard at the front of the field, Burke was in contention but came up one position short for the top step of the podium. Weinberg, who started the main event in ninth, drove his way through the lead pack to score a fourth-place finish. Showing pace and aggression, Weinberg, similar to Burke, challenged for the race win.

Baker scored a heat race win and improved on his qualifying position in all four of his heat races to make it an all Supertune front row for the start of the main event. Settling into second early, just behind his teammate, Baker led the main event but was shuffled back when the top-ten drivers battled for the victory over the final five circuits ending his day in seventh. 2019 ROK the RIO Junior 100cc Champion Jorge Ortiz threw his hat in the mix in the Junior ROK class and though he was eventually classified in the 23rd position, he did show pace and progress over the weekend. Joining his Supertune teammates in the top-ten, Ortiz claimed eighth place results in heats three and four and if it wasn’t for contact at the start of the main event, likely could have placed four Supertune drivers in the top-ten.

Cameron’s younger brother Carson Weinberg entered the Mini ROK category as he, Fernando Luque and Colin Ruess would fly the Supertune colors. Weinberg, after starting eleventh in the main event, drove into the top-five before finishing in the sixth position. Fernando Luque and Colin Ruess finished 28th and 29th respectively after both continually improved throughout the race weekend with Luque’s best heat race result being eleventh and Ruess in 17th in the thirty-four-kart strong Mini ROK field.

Competing in the Senior 100cc class, Alex Zhang ran mid-pack for the majority of the race. As the largest class on the grid featuring fifty drivers, Zhang’s best finish of 23rd was the highlight of his heat races before being scored in P31 after the main event.

Cruttenden added, “We will begin testing shortly for the upcoming Florida Winter Tour that will start in January. We have team openings in all classes and look forward to making next season our best one yet.”
